About my work in Stowmarket

Stowmarket's mix of older terraced housing near the centre and large modern estates around the edge — particularly to the south and east — gives me plenty of work in a typical week. Kitchens, bathrooms, fencing, decorating, gardening, doors and windows, light plumbing and the long list of small repairs are the kind of jobs I'm called out for most often. I'll travel to any postcode in IP14 and the surrounding villages of Stowupland, Onehouse, Combs, Old Newton and Haughley. Email me a description of the job and a couple of photos and I'll come back to you the same day with an honest quote.

A short history of Stowmarket

Stowmarket grew up on the line between Ipswich and Bury at a point where the Gipping made the land slightly easier. The market charter dates from the thirteenth century and the parish church of St Peter and St Mary is medieval in origin, though the spire is a Victorian replacement after the original was struck by lightning. The Stowmarket Navigation, completed in 1793, briefly turned the town into an inland port, with barges working the canalised Gipping all the way to Ipswich. Industries followed: corn milling, malting, brewing, explosive manufacturing and the great Glasgow Iron Works, which kept the town busy through the nineteenth century.

The Museum of East Anglian Life, an open-air museum spread over seventy acres along the river, is the town's cultural jewel. Old farm buildings, watermills, a Tudor hall and a working smithy have been brought together to tell the story of regional rural life, and it is deservedly popular. The high street has been pedestrianised and offers a well-judged mix of chain stores and independent traders. Stowmarket's railway station sits on the Great Eastern Main Line, which gives the town a fast commuter link to Ipswich and London Liverpool Street and has fuelled a lot of recent housing growth on the southern and western edges. The mix of older terraces near the centre and new-build estates on the outskirts means there's a steady stream of varied work for any handyman.

Stowmarket handyman FAQs

Do you work on the Cedars Park and Chilton Leys estates in Stowmarket?

Yes, regularly. Most of my Stowmarket work is in the family homes on the modern estates — bathrooms, fences, kitchens, flat-pack and the steady stream of small jobs that go with raising a family.

Will you tidy up after the job?

Always. I leave the house cleaner than I found it, and any waste leaves with me. Bigger strip-outs go to a licensed transfer station and the disposal is itemised on your invoice so there are no surprises.

How do I get a quote in Stowmarket?

Send me an email at info@handymanwilliam.co.uk with a short description of the job and a photo or two if you can. I'll come back to you the same working day with an honest opinion and a no-obligation written quote. Most small jobs in Stowmarket can be priced without a site visit; larger jobs I'll come and look at first.

Are you insured to work on my home in Stowmarket?

Yes. I carry full public liability insurance and can email a copy of the certificate before any work starts. For any gas or notifiable electrical work I bring in Gas Safe and NICEIC-registered contacts so the right paperwork sits behind the job.
