About my work in Brandon
Brandon's mix of flint cottages, post-war housing and Forestry Commission estate properties keeps me steadily busy. The Breckland air is dry and the soil is sandy, which makes for some unusual quirks: foundations that move with the seasons, fences that need a deeper post-set than usual, gardens that drain almost too well. A short history of Brandon
Brandon is a flint town in every sense. Its houses, church and even its old industrial buildings are built from the dark, glassy stone, and the surrounding chalk gave the town an industry that lasted longer here than anywhere else in Britain — the knapping of gun-flints. From the seventeenth century well into the twentieth, Brandon men chipped flint cores into precise sparking shapes for muskets, supplying armies as far away as North America and Africa. A small museum still demonstrates the craft.
Geographically the town sits on the edge of Breckland, a sandy, heath-covered region that once had Britain's largest medieval rabbit warrens. After the First World War much of that open heath was planted with conifers to create Thetford Forest, and Brandon now sits with a sea of pine on three sides. The River Little Ouse runs through the town centre, marking the Suffolk–Norfolk border, and the Brandon Country Park gives walkers and cyclists miles of trails. The town itself is modest — a long high street, a strong sense of community and a lot of bungalows and post-war semis. Many of those properties have flat-pack kitchens, fitted wardrobes and garden fences that need a hand now and then, which is the kind of work that brings me to the Breckland end of the county most weeks of the year.
