About my work in Hadleigh
Working on a Hadleigh property is rarely boring. The High Street's timber-framed and Georgian houses are full of sloping floors, plaster repairs, oak beams and joinery that asks for a careful eye. The streets behind it have plenty of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and the modern estates around the edge of town have all the usual family-home maintenance to be getting on with. A short history of Hadleigh
Hadleigh sits in the rolling clay country between Ipswich and the Stour, on the small River Brett. It was already a prosperous market town in Saxon times — Guthrum, the Danish king who agreed peace with Alfred, is traditionally said to be buried here — and it grew rich on the medieval cloth trade, specialising in heavy broadcloths sold across northern Europe. The High Street is the result of that wealth: a long, gently curving sweep of half-timbered, plaster-fronted, jettied houses, with elegant Georgian rebuilds slipped in between them.
Three buildings dominate the centre. The Guildhall, a fifteenth-century timber-framed structure still in use as a parish meeting place, is one of the best of its kind in England. The Deanery Tower next door is a striking red-brick gatehouse from 1495, all that survives of an ambitious palace begun by Archdeacon Pykenham. And St Mary's Church is enormous, with one of Suffolk's few lead-clad spires. Hadleigh was the cradle of the Oxford Movement in the 1830s; the rector at the time, Hugh James Rose, helped launch the High-Church revival from the Deanery Tower. Today Hadleigh is a friendly, slightly bohemian place with independent shops, a thriving farmers' market and a lot of well-loved older houses. Their lath-and-plaster walls, sash windows and sloping floors are exactly the sort of work I enjoy.
