Why electrical work needs the right person
Domestic electrical work in England and Wales is regulated under Part P of the Building Regulations. That means certain types of work — new circuits, anything in special locations like bathrooms, consumer unit changes — legally have to be carried out by a Part P registered electrician (or notified to the council and inspected). The penalties for not doing this aren't just legal: an uncertified bit of electrical work will invalidate your home insurance, it'll show up in any house sale survey, and it'll cost you money to rectify before a buyer will exchange.
I'm an honest tradesman: I'm not a registered electrician. So my approach is straightforward — I do the work that doesn't legally need certification (replacing like-for-like fittings, fitting smart switches and dimmers in non-bathroom locations, replacing pendant lampshades, fitting internal lighting where the existing circuit is unchanged) and I bring in a Part P registered Suffolk electrician for everything else, with a proper certificate at the end.
What I can do directly
The everyday jobs I'm comfortable handling directly: changing a like-for-like ceiling rose and pendant, fitting a new lampshade, swapping a faceplate switch or socket of identical rating, fitting a dimmer switch in a non-bathroom location, fitting plug-in smart kit, swapping a wall light fitting, mounting a TV bracket and concealing the cable through a wall (the cable goes through ducting, not directly into the plaster), and similar straightforward like-for-like swaps.
None of this is rocket science but it's still done with the power off at the consumer unit, with a proper voltage tester to confirm dead, and with appropriate tightening torque on the screw terminals. Loose terminals are a common cause of overheating and a real fire risk.
What I subcontract to a registered electrician
Anything more substantial goes through one of the qualified Part P registered electricians I work with regularly across Suffolk. That includes: new socket circuits, additional sockets on extended ring mains, new lighting circuits, anything in a bathroom, anything outdoors, consumer unit upgrades, EV charger installations, electric shower fitting, electric oven and hob circuits, full house rewires, and PAT testing for landlords.
I'll co-ordinate the visit so it slots into a wider job (a bathroom refit, for instance, will have the electrician arrive on the right day for first fix, then again for second fix), I'll handle the prep work that doesn't need certification (chasing walls, mounting back boxes), and the certificate gets posted to you within a few days of completion.
Smart home and lighting upgrades
Smart home gear is increasingly a regular booking. Fitting a smart thermostat (Hive, Nest, Tado), smart heating valves on radiators, smart switches and dimmers in non-bathroom locations, smart-bulb compatibility checks, video doorbells (covered separately on the security page), and the Wi-Fi mesh network setup needed to make all of it actually work reliably across a typical Suffolk home with thick walls and slow upstairs signal.
For lighting design, dropped pendants, kitchen plinth lighting, under-cabinet LED strips, garden festoon lighting and outdoor wall lights, I'll work alongside the registered electrician on the wiring side and handle all the carpentry and finishing work directly.
EICRs, landlord checks and PAT testing
Landlords in Suffolk are now required to have a current Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for every privately rented property — renewed at least every five years, and at every change of tenant. I work with electricians who carry out EICRs across the county, can quote and book on your behalf, and can carry out any C2 or C3 remedial works flagged in the report. PAT testing for portable appliances in let properties is also straightforward to arrange.

No — I'm a handyman who works with qualified Part P registered Suffolk electricians for any work that requires certification. You get a proper certificate at the end of the job.
Can you fit a new socket?
A new socket usually requires Part P notification because it's adding load to a circuit. I'll bring in a registered electrician for that work and co-ordinate the visit.
How much does a registered electrician cost?
A standard half-day for a small job (a couple of new sockets, or a fitting in a bathroom) is normally in the £150-£250 range plus parts. Larger work is quoted per project.
Can you replace a light fitting?
Yes — like-for-like ceiling rose and pendant changes are standard handyman work and don't need certification. Anything that changes the circuit needs the electrician.
Do you do EICRs for landlords?
