About my work in Leiston

Leiston's red-brick terraces, ex-Garrett housing and the 1960s estates around them give me a steady stream of varied work. The town's proximity to the coast means I see a lot of timber and ironwork that's getting on a bit, and I'm regularly out at Sizewell and along the lanes to Aldringham and Theberton. I cover the whole of Leiston and the surrounding coastal villages for carpentry, plumbing, painting, fencing, gardens and the small jobs that any home will throw at you. Drop me a line with a few photos of what you'd like done, and I'll come back to you the same day.

A short history of Leiston

Leiston's character was shaped by ironwork. From 1778 the Garrett family ran an engineering works in the town, growing it from a small forge into one of the most important agricultural-machinery manufacturers in nineteenth-century Britain. Garrett's Long Shop, built in 1853, is one of the earliest examples of a flow-line factory in the world and now houses a superb working museum. Steam traction engines, threshing machines and even military vehicles all rolled out of Leiston and were exported around the empire. The Garrett works finally closed in 1980, but its legacy is everywhere in the town's grid of red-brick terraces.

Older still is Leiston Abbey, a Premonstratensian foundation moved here in the fourteenth century from a marshy site at Minsmere. Substantial ruins survive in farmland on the edge of town, with concerts held there in summer. A few miles east, the Sizewell beach is dominated by the Sizewell A and B nuclear power stations, with C now under construction; love them or loathe them, they are a defining presence in modern Leiston life. Beyond the beach is the RSPB's Minsmere reserve, one of the great birding sites in Britain. The town itself is friendly and down-to-earth, with practical Victorian terraces, more recent estates and a steady demand for the sort of trades work I do — extensions, kitchens, fences, doors and decorating.

Leiston handyman FAQs

Do you work on the ex-Garrett housing in Leiston?

Yes — the rows of Garrett-built workers' cottages around Leiston and the Sizewell road have their own characteristic mix of Victorian brick, original sashes and small back kitchens. I've worked on plenty of them and enjoy the puzzle of fitting modern living into the old footprint sympathetically.

Do you charge a call-out fee in Leiston?

No call-out fee for jobs I can quote and complete the same visit. For longer or more complex work I'll come and look first, and that visit is free within the Leiston area.

How quickly can you start a job in Leiston?

Small repairs and odd jobs in Leiston I can usually fit in within the same week. Larger projects — kitchens, bathrooms, decorating a whole room — generally need two to four weeks of notice depending on the time of year.

Do you supply materials or do I?

Either works. For small jobs in Leiston I'll bring everything with me. For larger projects most clients prefer to buy materials themselves so they can choose colours and brands; I'm happy to give a sensible shopping list and pick things up on your behalf if that's easier.
