About my work in Lavenham
Working in Lavenham is a privilege, and one I never quite take for granted. Almost everything here is listed, almost everything has a story, and almost everything will cost you more in materials and time than the equivalent job in a modern house. That suits me — I'd rather take on three thoughtful Lavenham repairs than ten bland new-build jobs. I cover the whole of the village and the surrounding Babergh parishes for sympathetic carpentry, sash-window work, plaster repair, careful decorating and the quiet day-to-day maintenance that timber-framed buildings need to keep them standing for another four hundred years.
A short history of Lavenham
Lavenham, in the early sixteenth century, was reckoned to be the fourteenth richest place in England, paying more in tax than York or Lincoln. The source of all that money was blue cloth, the heavy, dyed broadcloth woven across this part of Suffolk and traded across northern Europe. The town's wealth was sunk into building, and because Lavenham fell into a long decline soon afterwards — undercut by Dutch weavers and changes in fashion — almost none of that medieval fabric was ever rebuilt. The result is what you see today: an entire town that has more or less stood still since around 1525.
The astonishing parish church of St Peter and St Paul, on the hill above the town, is a wool-church of breathtaking ambition, with one of the highest church towers in England. The Guildhall of Corpus Christi on the marketplace is a beautifully preserved timber-framed building cared for by the National Trust. Just about every building in the centre leans, bows or settles in some endearing way; the Crooked House is famous for it. Lavenham is now a major tourist draw, and its film cameos — including as Godric's Hollow in the Harry Potter films — have made it more famous still. Most of the houses are listed Grade II or higher, and any building work here calls for traditional materials and patient methods. That side of the trade is exactly what I enjoy most, so I'm in Lavenham fairly often.
