About my work in Bury St Edmunds
I work all over Bury St Edmunds and the villages of west Suffolk, and the variety is one of the things I most enjoy. A short history of Bury St Edmunds
Bury St Edmunds takes its name from Edmund, the East Anglian king martyred by a Danish army in 869 and later venerated as England's first patron saint. His shrine became one of the great pilgrimage sites of medieval Europe, and the abbey that grew up around it was, for centuries, one of the most powerful religious houses in the country. It was here in 1214 that the barons swore the oath that led directly to Magna Carta, a moment still commemorated by the town's motto, sacrarium regis, cunabula legis — shrine of a king, cradle of the law.
The abbey was dissolved in 1539 and stripped of its stone, but the great gatehouses still stand, and the ruins now form the heart of the Abbey Gardens. The town grew around them on a deliberate grid plan laid out by the Normans, which makes Bury one of the easiest English towns to navigate. Two cathedrals, an Adam-designed theatre, a working Greene King brewery and dozens of fine Georgian houses on Angel Hill give the centre its character. Twice-weekly markets keep the streets busy, and the surrounding countryside is a checkerboard of wheat fields, parkland estates and quiet villages. A great deal of my work in Bury and the villages around it involves carpentry repairs, kitchen and bathroom updates, and the gentle care that older listed buildings ask for.
