About my work in Saxmundham

I work right across Saxmundham and the villages around it, from Kelsale and Yoxford down to Sweffling, Carlton and Benhall. The mix of older High Street properties, post-war family homes and rural cottages keeps the work varied — kitchens, bathrooms, carpentry, plumbing, painting, fencing and gardening, plus the long tail of small repairs that any home will need. The town's good rail links and its proximity to the coast mean I can be at a job in Saxmundham, Snape or Aldeburgh within a quarter of an hour, which is useful when something needs sorting urgently.

A short history of Saxmundham

Saxmundham — usually shortened by locals to 'Sax' — is a quiet old market town that has seen more bustle in the past than it does today. The town's market charter was granted in 1272, and for centuries it was an important stop on the road from Ipswich to Yarmouth. The arrival of the East Suffolk Railway in 1859 pulled trade towards the new station and gradually shifted the centre of gravity, but the High Street still curves with an elegant series of Georgian and Victorian shopfronts.

The parish church of St John the Baptist sits at the south end of town, with a fine medieval tower; opposite it is a row of timber-framed cottages that survived later rebuilding. A bronze memorial near the centre commemorates Benjamin Britten, who frequently passed through on his way from London to Aldeburgh. Saxmundham serves as a service town for a wide rural hinterland: Friston, Kelsale, Snape, Yoxford and many other small villages all use Sax for shopping, schooling and the post office. Recent housing development on the edges of town has expanded the population without much altering the centre. The proximity to the coast, the Snape Maltings and the RSPB at Minsmere makes Saxmundham an unusually well-connected base for a small town. Older properties tend to be modest cottages of brick and lath; my work here is mostly carpentry, windows and the slow upkeep of homes that have been gently lived in for a century or more.

Saxmundham handyman FAQs

Do you work on the older properties on Saxmundham High Street?

Yes — the High Street has plenty of Georgian and Victorian buildings, and I take on sympathetic repairs, careful repainting, sash window work and the kind of quiet improvements that suit older properties.

Do you charge a call-out fee in Saxmundham?

No call-out fee for jobs I can quote and complete the same visit. For longer or more complex work I'll come and look first, and that visit is free within the Saxmundham area.

How quickly can you start a job in Saxmundham?

Small repairs and odd jobs in Saxmundham I can usually fit in within the same week. Larger projects — kitchens, bathrooms, decorating a whole room — generally need two to four weeks of notice depending on the time of year.

Do you supply materials or do I?

Either works. For small jobs in Saxmundham I'll bring everything with me. For larger projects most clients prefer to buy materials themselves so they can choose colours and brands; I'm happy to give a sensible shopping list and pick things up on your behalf if that's easier.
