About my work in Framlingham

Framlingham has more listed buildings than any other town its size in Suffolk, which is partly why I enjoy working here so much. The mix of timber-framed cottages, Georgian fronts on the market square and Victorian villas climbing the hill towards the College means every job is slightly different. I cover the whole of Fram and the surrounding villages for general handyman jobs, carpentry, plumbing, painting and decorating, fencing, gardens and the small tasks no one else seems to want to take on. Whether your property is medieval, Georgian, Victorian or built last decade, I'll work to the standard the building deserves.

A short history of Framlingham

Framlingham Castle is Suffolk's grandest medieval fortress and the heart of the town. It was raised in its current form by the Bigods at the end of the twelfth century and is unusual in having no central keep — instead the curtain walls and thirteen towers form a single great ring around an inner courtyard. It was here in 1553 that Mary Tudor was proclaimed Queen of England after Lady Jane Grey's brief reign, before riding south to claim the throne in person. The castle later served as a poorhouse, which is why the inner buildings look more domestic than martial.

The town grew up immediately south of the castle and was wealthy enough by the fifteenth century to build St Michael's, a church big enough to feel like a small cathedral. The Howard family — Dukes of Norfolk — left several superb tombs inside, and the organ is widely thought to be the finest of its date in the country. Framlingham College sits on a hill on the far side of the Mere, a Victorian foundation in red brick. The town's twentieth-century reputation has been sealed by the singer Ed Sheeran, who grew up nearby and wrote one of his most famous songs about the castle. Tourism has boomed, but the market on Saturdays still feels like a working country market. A lot of properties here are listed, and most of my Framlingham jobs are carpentry, decorating and the kind of repairs that older walls quietly need.

Framlingham handyman FAQs

Do you work on listed properties in Framlingham?

Yes — many Framlingham properties are listed, particularly around Market Hill and Castle Street. I'm experienced in sympathetic repairs, traditional materials and the consent process, and I'll tell you honestly when a job needs a specialist conservator rather than a handyman.

Do you supply materials or do I?

Either works. For small jobs in Framlingham I'll bring everything with me. For larger projects most clients prefer to buy materials themselves so they can choose colours and brands; I'm happy to give a sensible shopping list and pick things up on your behalf if that's easier.

Will you tidy up after the job?

Always. I leave the house cleaner than I found it, and any waste leaves with me. Bigger strip-outs go to a licensed transfer station and the disposal is itemised on your invoice so there are no surprises.

How do I get a quote in Framlingham?

Send me an email at info@handymanwilliam.co.uk with a short description of the job and a photo or two if you can. I'll come back to you the same working day with an honest opinion and a no-obligation written quote. Most small jobs in Framlingham can be priced without a site visit; larger jobs I'll come and look at first.
