About my work in Clare
Clare's tiny size belies how much there is to be done in its houses. The medieval and Tudor properties on the High Street alone keep a careful tradesman busy — sash repair, floorboard refixing, sympathetic re-decoration, plaster patching, all sorts of work that respects the building rather than fights it. A short history of Clare
Clare is small, but it has been important. The town sits on the River Stour in the very south of Suffolk, and from the eleventh century it was the seat of the de Clare family, one of the most powerful Norman dynasties in England. They built a great motte-and-bailey castle here, and although only fragments of stonework now sit on top of the steep mound, the bailey is preserved as a country park alongside the line of the long-closed Stour Valley Railway. The little Victorian station building still stands, oddly, within the castle bailey itself.
Clare grew rich on the medieval wool trade, and its high street is a textbook of late-medieval and Tudor timber-framed building. The Ancient House, with its dazzlingly intricate pargeting from 1473, is one of the most photographed buildings in Suffolk. The parish church of St Peter and St Paul is enormous for so small a town, a clear sign of past wealth, and the priory beside the river is the only Augustinian house in England to have been re-founded since the Reformation. Modern Clare is a quiet, friendly place with a strong farmers' market, antique shops and tea rooms, and it draws visitors all year round. Its older houses come with all the joys and frustrations of timber framing, and that's where most of my work in the south-west of Suffolk tends to begin.
