Maintenance gardening that actually keeps a garden looking good

The honest truth about garden maintenance is that it's mostly about consistency. A garden that gets two hours of attention every fortnight from March to October will always look better than one that gets a single panicked all-day rescue in July. I do regular maintenance visits across Suffolk for clients who want their garden to look cared-for without having to spend their own weekends on it.

A typical maintenance visit covers: mowing the lawn at the right cutting height for the season (lower in summer, higher in spring and autumn), edging the borders, hand-weeding the beds, checking shrubs and pruning anything dead or damaged, dead-heading roses and perennials, sweeping paths and patios, emptying water features, refilling bird baths and topping up bird feeders if requested, and a final tidy-up at the end. Garden waste goes into bags or bin and is removed if you don't have a green bin big enough.

Hedges, trees and big seasonal jobs

Hedges are a recurring Suffolk staple: privet, beech, hornbeam, leylandii, yew, box, and the increasingly common laurel. Most need cutting twice a year — once in late spring after the first growth flush, and once in late summer to tidy up before winter. I cut to a defined line using batons and string lines on tall hedges so the top sits straight, not in the wavy, sagged-in-the-middle line you see on a lot of DIY hedge work.

Bigger one-off seasonal jobs I take on: spring clear-outs after winter, complete bramble and overgrowth clearance on neglected gardens, rotavating and re-laying lawn turf, fence and gate repairs (see the dedicated fencing page), shed and garden building tidy-ups, raised bed construction, log splitting and stacking for wood-burner owners, and gutter clearance from a step ladder.

Small landscaping and garden building

For small landscaping I'll happily take on patio re-laying, path repairs, building raised vegetable beds, fitting trellis, putting up a pergola or arbour, laying weed membrane and gravel, building a small dry-stone-style wall, and replacing rotten sleepers in retained beds. For anything that genuinely needs heavy landscaping — major retaining walls, big drainage projects, full garden redesigns — I'll be honest about it not being my speciality and recommend a proper landscaper, with no commission and no fuss.

Tree surgery, considered separately

Anything bigger than a moderate pruning job goes through a properly qualified tree surgeon. The pruning of fruit trees, shrubs and ornamentals up to a sensible ladder height is something I do as standard, but anything climbed or substantial goes through someone with the right tickets and the right insurance.

One thing worth saying: Suffolk is one of the driest counties in the UK, which has real implications for garden maintenance. Lawns suffer in dry summers far more than people expect, and the answer isn't usually more watering — it's the right cutting height, sensible aeration in autumn, and the right grass species for our soil. Coastal gardens (Aldeburgh, Felixstowe, Southwold) have salt-tolerance issues and benefit from windbreaks. Inland gardens are easier but the heavier clay around Bury St Edmunds and the river valleys needs careful seasonal handling. None of this is dramatic — it just means a Suffolk garden needs Suffolk-aware maintenance, not a generic suburban approach.
