Trusted independent handymen across the UK

Suffolk is the only county I work in — if you've found this page from somewhere further afield, the links below should help you reach a local independent handyman in your part of the country. Each one runs the same way I do: a single tradesman doing the work himself, no call centres, no salespeople, fair prices and honest quotes. They're not part of a franchise or a national group, just independent local businesses I respect and would be happy to recommend to friends and family living in their patch.

The list covers most of the North East — Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Hexham, Ashington and Alnwick — together with Rotherham in South Yorkshire, Maidstone in Kent, and Essex. If your nearest town isn't listed, the closest entry should still be a good starting point; most of these tradesmen cover a reasonable radius around their home town and they'll happily tell you whether your job falls inside it.

Why bother with a list of other handymen on my own website? Because the trade only works properly when the good independent operators stick together. A homeowner who can't find a trustworthy local tradesman is a homeowner who ends up paying through the nose for a national franchise, or worse, getting caught out by a doorstep cold-caller. Every name below is the kind of person you'd actually want walking into your home. If I can help you find someone honest in your part of the country, I will.

Every link on this page goes to an independent business, not a directory or a lead-generation site. There is no commercial arrangement behind these recommendations — nobody pays to appear here and I don't earn anything if you click through. They're listed because I either know the tradesman personally, have spoken to them at length, or have heard consistently good things about their work from customers and other tradespeople in the trade.

One useful thing to know if you're calling around: a good independent handyman will almost always quote in writing before starting any work, will be happy to email you their public liability insurance certificate on request, and will give you an honest opinion about whether the job is worth doing in the first place. If anyone you ring is reluctant to do any of those three things, that’s usually a sign to keep looking. The list above is a list of people who do all three as standard, because that’s how an honest small trades business runs.

Whatever county you're in, the same broad rules apply when hiring any tradesperson into your home: ask for the quote in writing, ask to see the insurance certificate, ask roughly how long the job will take, and ask what the final tidy-up will involve and whether waste removal is included. Get those answered up front and you avoid almost all of the disappointments and disputes that ruin home-improvement work. The handymen on this page all answer those questions before you even have to ask, which is part of why they're on it.
