About my work in Beccles

Beccles is a beautiful place to work in. The Georgian streets, the herring-quay houses by the river and the long ranks of cottages climbing up from the marshes all have their own character — and their own characteristic problems. Sash cords go, lath-and-plaster crumbles in the upstairs ceilings, the cellar doors warp in the river damp, and the kitchen taps in the older terraces always seem to come apart on a Sunday. I cover the whole of Beccles and the villages around it for general handyman work, carpentry, plumbing, decorating and the small jobs that big firms can't be bothered with.

A short history of Beccles

Beccles stands on a low ridge above the River Waveney, looking north across the marshes to Norfolk. The town's name comes from the Old English for a pasture by a stream, and that watery character has shaped its whole story. Beccles was once a major herring port, with smokehouses lining the quay and wherries carrying goods between Yarmouth and Bungay. A series of devastating fires in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries swept away most of the medieval town, which is why so much of what you see today is good Georgian brick: tall sash windows, fanlights over panelled doors and the long, elegant frontage of the New Market.

The most striking landmark is St Michael's Church, whose great bell tower stands oddly separate from the nave — local lore says it was built apart so the ringing wouldn't shake the cliff edge. The town also has a Georgian theatre, a small but excellent museum and the surviving wherry quays where pleasure boats now moor for the broads. Beccles still feels like a working town rather than a tourist one: a good butcher, a proper ironmonger, schools and chapels all close together. Many of its older homes have been gently extended over generations, and it's the joinery and plaster repairs in those Georgian rooms that I most enjoy taking on.

Beccles handyman FAQs

Do you cover the riverside properties on the Waveney in Beccles?

Yes — I work right down to the quayside and along the Bridge Road properties. Damp, swelling timber and movement in older brickwork are common in the riverside houses, and I'm happy to take an honest look and tell you whether something is cosmetic or structural.

Can you maintain a Beccles Georgian sash window?

Yes, sash repair is one of my favourite jobs. I re-cord, re-glaze, splice in new timber, replace pulleys and beads, and repaint properly so the window opens, closes and seals as it should.

Will you tidy up after the job?

Always. I leave the house cleaner than I found it, and any waste leaves with me. Bigger strip-outs go to a licensed transfer station and the disposal is itemised on your invoice so there are no surprises.
